Vietnam - November 15, 2022

ASVAB stands for Armed Services Career Aptitude Battery, a multiple-choice test developed by the Department of Defense and used to assess the mental aptitude of people who want to enlist in the United States Army. ASVAB was established in 1968 and officially used by all military branches in 1976. In 2002, the test was revised to upgrade the difficulty and the content. Every year, ASVAB helps all the United States military branches find the best and most qualified candidates.

Candidates must meet some basic criteria to be enlisted.

  • 18 years old or older or 17 years old with parental consent.
  • A U.S. Citizen or have an INS I-151/I-551 Green Card (Legal Permanent Resident) or have valid documents that can enlist (the success probability is not guaranteed).
  • Possession of a high school diploma is preferred. Possession of GED or attendance or undergrad certificates has lower priority.
  • Physical standards, including height, weight and fitness meet.
  • Medical standards meet. Applicants are required to take a military medical exam, which includes basic criteria and special criteria for mental health, physical limitations or deformities, sleep disorders, learning, psychiatric, or behavioral disorders.
  • Candidates must participate in a screening process for alcoholic substance abuse and banned substance use.
  • Not in criminal records cases.

The taking test place is The Military Entrance Processing Station (MEP) or a satellite Military Entrance Test (MET). If the candidate is far from the MEPs and METs locations, the candidate can take the test in Federal government buildings, armories, and reserve stations. Depending on the locations, the candidates may do the test in different formats, with a paper and pencil (P&P ASVAB) and a computer (CAT – ASVAB). The P&P ASVAB test has 225 questions while CAT – ASVAB has 145 questions, but the difficulty level of the CAT – ASVAB test questions is higher than that of the P&P ASVAB.

The Military ASVAB test consists of 9 topics created to measure test takers' academic skills and technical aptitude. There are 4 important topics, and the total scores determine the majority of the results, including:
