Texas CDL, or Texas commercial driver's license, is a certificate that gives a driver the legal ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle on Texas public roads. Texas allows three types of CDL, class A, class B, and class C. Each allows owners to operate a different vehicle.

  • Class A: vehicles with Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) over 26,000 pounds and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) towed above 10,000 pounds. Examples: tractor-trailers, triple-trailers, and livestock carriers.
  • Class B: single vehicle with GVWR over 26,000 pounds or GVWR of towed vehicle less than 10,000 pounds. Examples: a regular truck, a school bus.
  • Class C: vehicle carrying 16 - 23 passengers or hazardous materials that do not meet the criteria of Class A or Class B. Examples: smaller buses, passenger vans, and HAZMAT vehicles.

Commercial driver's licenses also carry certain endorsements depending on the state where drivers legally operate.

  • H: transporting hazardous materials such as flammable and combustible liquids, gases or other explosives. Require drivers to take extra tests and may have additional criteria.
  • N: permanent or temporary tank vehicles.
  • P: passenger vehicles.
  • S: school buses.
  • T: double or triple trailers over a specific weight.
  • X: transportation of hazardous materials in a tank vehicle.

Drivers must be 18 years old and have a Texas driver's license before applying for the CDL. For the H and P endorsements across state lines, drivers must be 21 years old or older. A CDL license for ages 18 to 84 costs $97 and expires after eight years. A new CDL license for ages 85 or upper costs $26 and expires after two years. The CDL endorsement expires with the Commercial Driver's License. The H or X endorsement expires 5 years after completing the security assessment.

Drivers must provide several documents for the CDL registration process, including a Texas driver's license, U.S. citizenship or legal residency, Texas residency, identity, Social Security Number, Valid Texas own vehicle registration, owning vehicle insurance, and a completed CDL application. Importantly, drivers must submit a DOT Medical Certificate, which includes some tests about no use of Schedule 1 drugs, amphetamines, narcotics, or any habit-forming drugs, blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, distinguish colors ability and heard forced whisper ability. Drivers can find on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Registry website a list of Nationally Registered Medical Examiners by visiting. The DOT physical fee in Texas is around $100 to $150.

The Texas CDL exam consists of two tests: the CDL Knowledge Test and the CDL Skills Test. All the candidates must pass the CDL knowledge test first to be granted the Commercial Learner's Permit (CPL). Only then can the candidate candidates continue taking the skills test.

The CDL knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice for classes B and C and 70 multiple-choice questions for class A. Topics revolve around problems such as general knowledge, combination (for Class A only), commercial texas rules, air brakes and endorsements. The candidate must achieve 80% of the score to be counted as passing and getting the CLP. If a failure occurs, the candidate can do the test that time again three times and has a 90-day limit to take the permit test.

The CDL skills test consists of a vehicle inspection, an on-road exam, an air brake inspection test, merging, backing up, posture, parallel parking, quick and smooth stops, and lane changing. If a candidate passes the skills test, it takes 7 weeks on average to receive a CDL in Texas.
