New York City takes great pride touting the vast array of Historic District Neighborhoods in its midst, from The African Burial Ground and Commons to Ellis Island, Gansevoort, Stuyvesant, etc. But no way no how, can history pertaining to NYC be mentioned without touting the LOWER EAST SIDE, home to the Historic Blue Moon Hotel, which was created in homage to just that. And, Historic Hotels of America certainly took note, having recently conferred an award upon The Historic Blue Moon Hotel. Can one blame them?

As The Lower East Side became the bastion of the Garment Industry, and so too, the newly immigrant populace as their primary workforce, 1848 saw the creation of The Lower East Side’s largest department store, Edward Ridley & Sons, located at 315-317 and 319-321 Grand Street, at the corner of Grand and Orchard Streets ‘Where the Trolleys That Take Folks from The Grand Street/Williamsburg Ferry Bring Regular and Potential Customers To Ridley & Sons’.

Preservation notes that there are 37,600 landmark properties in NYC, in 152 historic districts and historic district extensions in all 5 boroughs, the total number of protected sites include 1,445 individual landmarks, 121 interior landmarks, and 11 scenic landmarks. Stone Street is one of NYC’s oldest streets where two 17th century roads in the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam of 1658 had the 1st cobbled street. The oldest restaurant in NYC is Fraunces Tavern from 1719. The Oldest apartment building in NYC is the Osborne at 205 W. 57th Street from 1883. The Oldest Structure in NYC is St. Paul’s Chapel (1764), The first NYC skyscraper is The 11 Story Tower Building (1889). The Oldest Chinese Restaurant is Nom Wah Tea Parlor (1920) in Chinatown.

However, there is NO historic neighborhood quite like The Lower East Side of Manhattan, where every sight and smell is a reference to an age, an era and there is no hotel in NYC which so authentically captures the period and captivates their guests imagination with the wholesome Americana and memorabilia on display as well as the remarkable preservation of the building enhanced by the art and design of a passionate artist.

The Lower East Side Community Hero Award, conferring public recognition to a member of the community who has had influence on life on The Lower East Side, must go indisputably to Artist and Developer of The Historic Blue Moon Hotel, Randy Settenbrino, who is truly deserving of such an honor and should have his name put forth for the 2023 award. While many are already aware of the 5-year art and design project undertaken by Randy to transform the 1865 Julius Boekel-designed tenement into what is now the award winning Historic Blue Moon Hotel, it is the post-pandemic resurgence to restore the edifice to its glory, that deserves recognition. The 22-room hotel, an ode to the jazz age as ‘the hotel for the arts’ names each guestroom after a celebrity from that special era i.e., Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Sophie Tucker, Benny Goodman, etc. When the pandemic began, the tenant operating the hotel fled without notice and left the premises in a state of severe disrepair, where it looked as if it would take “an Act of G-d’ to bring the hotel’s standard of elegance up to par again. Randy and his family accepted the challenge and have reopened as an even more elegant hotel. That’s what ‘devoted to the cause’ means. If there is an affinity for history and community, it’s a boon to be able to combine the two into a comfort zone for their guests.

To all history buffs and adventure seekers, a tip: A stay at the Historic Blue Moon Hotel, 100 Orchard Street, is the ideal setting in which to step into that special time and place, no other proprietor has ever ventured to tip their hat to.
