Also known as Herkimer quartz crystals, the gemstones are so named because of their discovery in and around Herkimer County, New York. The crystals are known for their clarity, as well as their natural faceting, which led to them being referred to as diamonds.
While each crystal is unique, Herkimer diamonds usually have a total of 18 faces, with 6 on each point and 6 around the center. The new Elise silver-plated teardrop pendant from Ashur Jewelry presents a Herkimer diamond in a floating locket.
