Dr. Alice Prince aggressively targets Black businesses through her work with the US Department of Energy

(September 24, 2021. St. Louis, MO) – According to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, “The Impact of COVID-19 on Small Business Owners: Evidence of Early-Stage Losses from the April 2020 Current Population Survey,” only 637,769 of the 11,710,360 businesses in the United States in April 2020 were Black owned, which is 5.45% of businesses. Yet, the 42.01 million Black people living in the U.S. at the end of 2019 comprise 12.8% of the total population. With publicly traded companies, the numbers are even more miniscule: of the 3,671 public companies in the U.S. reported by The Wall Street Journal in 2017, merely eight Black-owned companies were found, a disappointing and disparaging 0.002% of public companies.

“From the unknown likes of Alexander Miles who invented the electric elevator doors that automatically open and close and chemist, Percy Julian, who was the first to synthesize the natural product physostigmine and earn 130 chemical patents (lauded for humanitarian achievements) to well known chemist, Madame CJ Walker, and modern day celebrity and astronomer, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Black scholars have been a preeminent authority in science and technology from the beginning. Please be reminded of the contributions of businessmen who share your history and encouraged knowing that you have the capability to do the same,” Dr. Prince affirms new program participants via her company’s virtual lunch and learn series.

The Lunch and Learn Series are workshops hosted within the Pathways United Economic Entrepreneur Impact and Diversity Program, sometimes hosted by Dr. Alice Prince.
