MAKING A NAME IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
For those of us that have heard about, or are fans of Kiya Boyd, the stories of her name, upbringing, journey, and lifestyle have been elusive. More so for those that haven’t even heard of her at all.
In this exclusive interview, Marlo Mell reveals hermusical journey so far, his style, upcoming projects, the inspiration behind her music, her biggest motivation, her zeal to exceed expectations, and more.
Interviewer: When did you start singing?
I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. Gospel/Jazz music inspired me to sing. I loved hearing every part of a song’s musical structure; the bass, the rhythm, the flow, etc. And then I started focusing on the vocals and it made me want to add my own vocals.
Interviewer: What would you say is the inspiration behind your music?
I would say that I’m inspired by my own anxiety and depression. I know it sounds a bit strange, but my anxiety has fueled me to work harder than I ever have in my life. I used to let that hinder me and I wouldn’t be able to focus because the negative thoughts in my head were taking over every other thought I had, good or bad. But now, I’ve found a way to make it work for me and not against me. So, I write about my daily struggles, things that I’ve been through, and what life looks like on the outside looking in.
Interviewer: How would you best describe your music?
My music is chill, with some energetic undertones. Happy, but with seriousiness to it. A mix of pop & R&B, with house influences and a slight hip-hop sound. It’s inclusive and empowering. My lyrics are always open to interpretation.
Interviewer: What would you say is your biggest motivation?
My motivation to do anything is just to say I’m not the same person that I was yesterday. I don’t want to live a normal life or be the same person forever; I want to grow, be happy, and I want to express myself the best way that I can. I want music to be like an outlet for me so that it can reach others who don’t have a voice quite yet. I currently live in South Korea and I went from being a KPOP Trainee to just being independent. I feel that I want to prove to myself that new dreams can replace old daydreams.
Interviewer: Do you have any short-term plans?
I am solely focused on music and running my candle business, “KBae Candles” right now. I want to record and release a full album later this year and I want to be more consistent with my social media. I’m a little behind on keeping up with the latest trends, but I’d also like to set my own.
Interviewer: What motivated you into releasing your first ever single?
I was in a long-term relationship with someone who stuck by my side while I was going through hard times with my old KPOP entertainment company. That person really helped to put my mind in the right headspace and basically told me that I don’t need a company to believe in me if I already believe in myself… and he was right. Shortly after I left, that person helped me get everything I needed in order to release my very first single, “Show Me” in 2019. The rest is history.
Interviewer: Any long term plans?
I hope to sign to an independent record label or even continue to just be an independent artist with greater exposure opportunities. I would also like to work with some established artists in America and possibly make music in Korean [language] as well. My main goal is to make more music, tour the world at some point, and do more serious acting projects. I’ve been modeling in Korea for years now, but I’m ready to do much more with my music.
