Los Angeles, California May 7, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Renowned meteorite collector, John Higgins is going to put one of his most valuable collection pieces that is the 6.2kg Gatuto meteorite on auction this month. The Bonhams Auction sale is called Meteorites Online and it will be held between 18th and 28th May. Mr. Higgins teamed up with Mahamad Nur Ogle to obtain nearly 10 kg of the total meteorites that had fallen in Gatuto, Kenya on April 24th, 2020. Michael Farmer gathered a total of 9.3 kg of the material independently. Most of the complete meteors are mainly coated with black fusion crust. Their insides are light grey and have a crystalline form with visible fresh metal grains. Some of the stones have unique and extremely thin black shock veinlets. These outer space wonders will be available to collectors from all over the world through this auction. The stones are 100% authentic and were verified by the Meteoritical Society on 4th July as an L6 ordinary chondrite with shock stage S2 and a weathering grade of W0.

On April 24th, 2020, Gatuto, Kenya was showered with multiple meteorites from outer space at 8:27 pm. People in that area witnessed a bright trail in the sky and heard earth-shattering loud bangs 5 minutes after. A family saw the fireball while they were on the road and heard detonations. Not long after they saw an object impacting the Earth 15 meters away. It created a 1-meter deep hole in his maze garden. In the morning a meteor of 6200 grams was excavated from that hole. Another one fell through the roof of a woman who was preparing supper. The stone shattered in the impact with the concrete floor in her house near the Kombuini village. A meteor of 2290 grams was discovered next to a tree on a farm, whose bark was shredded due to the impact of the stone.

Another 1 kg stone was excavated near Kerugoya-Kaguma road beside the Kimicha village. 494.4 grams of meteor fragments were collected from other farms. And they also excavated 117.7 grams of fragments near Kimichia that created while marks on the Kagio-Kutus road upon impact. A meteor over 8 kg was discovered at 2.2 km NNW of Gauto behind a man's house. Some people broke the stone with hammers and managed to collect some fragments. A 7.4 kg of the remaining meteor could be collected. The total weight of the recovered meteorite is 25 kgs. One of the intact pieces of e meteor is going to be on sale through Meteorites Online sale by the Bonhams Auction starting from May 18th.

John Higgins has put one of the best stones excavated from the site on the auction on the Bonhams. The stone is completely intact without any damage. The meteor weighs 6.2 kilos (13.2 lbs) in total measuring 8 x 7 x 5 in. The buyer will also get a Certificate of Authenticity from the International Meteorite Collectors Association. It is dated February 8, 2021, to John Higgins, IMCA #9822. This particular meteorite was collected from the maze field of Joseph Gakere who lives near Mount Kenya National Park, Kirinyaga County in Kenya. He was outside with his family when he witnessed a fireball crashing down into the ground around 8:30 on April 24th last year. The following morning he discovered a 3 feet giant hole at the place of his maze plants. The 6.2 kg space stone was excavated and verified by the Meteoritical Society.
