Steven Jonas, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FNYAS, has been recognized with the Albert Einstein Award of Medicine by the International Association of Who's Who

Dr. Steven Jonas, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FNYAS, East Setauket, NY, is recognized with the Albert Einstein Award of Medicine for his extensive experience in and contributions to the field of Preventive Medicine.

NEW YORK, NY, April 28, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jonas has been commended for his accomplishments in the field of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, an area he has worked in for more than 5 decades. He has dedicated an impressive forty-three years to his role as Professor at Stony Brook University where he has taught students as well as completing valuable research into Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Jonas has enjoyed a long and successful career specializing in Preventive Medicine as well as an ongoing interest and dedication in the areas of health and health policy and the broader aspects of exercise, wellness, and drug policy reform. Dr. Jonas made the decision to retire at the end of 2013 and holds Professor Emeritus status at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Jonas began his academic endeavors receiving his B.A. from Columbia College and attaining his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1962. Following on from this, he completed his residency in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at New York City Department of Health. He received his M.P.H. from Yale School of Medicine in 1967 and his M.S. in Health Management at Wagner School of New York University in 1997. His illustrious education stood him in good stead for a successful career.

Highly respected in the medical profession, Dr. Jonas is an elected Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences as well as the American Public Health Association, the American College of Preventive Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the UK Royal Society of Medicine. He is also honored to have previously held the position of President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine, more recently named the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research. He is also a previous member of the New York State Board for Medicine.

An expert in Preventive Medicine, mid-career Dr. Jonas decided to engage in personal health promotion. He initially began running in October 1980 and his passion grew exponentially as he set himself new challenges. In 1983, he began marathon training, which led him to be introduced to the sport of triathlon. The combination of swimming, running, and cycling, excited him and in the same year he completed his first Triathlon. As an accomplished writer in his professional filed (for example he is co-author of "Jonas-Kovner's Health Care Delivery in the United States," a standard text book now in its 12th edition), he noted that at that time there were no books for beginners in the sport. In 1986, he published the first one, "Triathloning for Ordinary MortalsĀ®," a book that is still in use. He subsequently published four other books on various aspects of the sport. At present, he has completed over 256 races and in the 2021 season, the pandemic allowing for such endeavors, he hopes to be competing again, in the 85-89 age group.

Dr. Jonas is honored to have received a variety of awards throughout his career. He was awarded the Founders' Medal from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in recognition of his contribution to the education of medicine. Dr. Jonas is also privileged to have been a recipient of the 'Duncan Clark Career Achievement Award' of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine and the 'Faculty Recognition Award of the Graduate Program in Public Health' on behalf of Stony Brook University in 2008. He was presented with the Yale School of Public Health 'Distinguished Alumni Award' in 2010, and in 2011, he received the 'Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Service, United University Professions, Health Science Center Chapter' from Stony Brook University.

Dr. Jonas has also been acknowledged by "Top Doctors Honors Edition of Trademark Who's Who" as an honored member in 2016 and was the recipient of the "Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award" by The Marquis Who's Who in 2019. In addition, he was awarded "Top Doctor 2020" by The Global Directory of Who's Who as well as the recipient of the "Albert Einstein Award of Medicine" by the International Association of Who's Who. Earlier in his career, in 1958, Dr. Jonas was awarded Phi Beta Kappa and since had his biography shared annually in Who's Who in America. Dr. Jonas has also been recognized since 1988 as a Mensan.

Dr. Jonas is also noted for his published works as an author, co-author, editor, and co-editor to 19 books of his own credit, and a further 18 in a collaborative effort. His works cover a range of topics with his first textbook being based on the U.S. Healthcare System called 'Health Care Delivery in the United States' that was published in 1977. He went on to produce titles including 'Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals', the first sporting book for beginners in the sport, 'Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice' the first preventive medicine textbook focusing on risk factors that patients present with rather than diseases with which they are subsequently diagnosed, 'Exercise is Medicine' designed to be used as the official textbook for the American College of Sports Medicine International Program (ACSM), 'A Clinician's Guide to Exercise Prescription' and 'Duathlon Training and Racing for Ordinary MortalsĀ®: Getting Started and Staying with It' the first book on the sport of duathlon. He also writes a column on the website of USA-Triathlon called "Ordinary Mortals Blog" that is published monthly.

Weight management is another key area Dr. Jonas has found interest in. He has co-authored various books on the subject that consider individual problems people face due to varying metabolisms and offer advice in finding the right techniques. One of these is 'Take Control of Your Weight'. In drug abuse policy, in 2016 he published 'End the Drug; Solve the Drug Problem: The Public Health Approach. He has also written extensively on U.S. politics. In 1992, he authored the book 'The New Americanism' and in 1996 (third version, 2013) "The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S., 1981-2022.
