JACKSON, Miss. - May 27, 2016 - PRLog -- The kickoff began with the presentation of the Gold Super Bowl Ball to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowl 50 by former 1975 State Champion and 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX champion Tyrone Keys. Joined by members of the 1975 Callaway Chargers team, Keys' mentor and Callaway's 1975 Defensive Coordinator Odell Jenkins returned May 13th, 2016 to present Keys' Gold Super Bowl ball to the Principal and staff. The 1975 State Championship football team from Callaway High School is the only team from Jackson, Mississippi to win a state championship in the past 50 years. They remain undefeated on the field at 12-0.
Jenkins also presented two grants totaling $2,000 to the Callaway football program from members of the 1975 Callaway Chargers team and classmates. These grants honor two teammates of Keys, the late Roy Coleman, Jr., quarterback and leader of the '75 State Championship Chargers and the late running back Walter Payton, leader of the '85 Super Bowl Chicago Bears. A $1000 grant was awarded to the Callaway Football Program and a $1000 grant was awarded to Callaway Senior Wide Receiver, Jordan Jefferson, who has exhibited extraordinary leadership qualities on and off the field.
The Roy Coleman, Jr./All Sports Community Service Scholarship Award & Walter Payton grants hold a special place for Tyrone Keys. When Keys played on the Callaway Chargers team in 1975 with Roy, it was a violent racial time in America. The team came together with a blend of character, courage and attitude towards each other that illustrates the kind of love and respect Keys would witness again later in his professional career with the 1985 Chicago Bears.
Keys explained, "A lot of people I meet remember the 1985 World Champion Bears quarterback, No. 9 Jim McMahon, but before the '85 Bears shuffled to win Super Bowl XX, there was the 1975 State Champion Callaway Chargers led by another No. 9 quarterback, Roy Coleman. Roy is the only quarterback to win a State Championship from Jackson, Mississippi in the last 50 years."
