Honda understands that buildings account for a greater level of energy consumption and CO2 emissions than any other source. The body shops, service centers, showrooms, and car washes used by auto dealerships naturally claim a fair amount of that energy, but existing energy-efficiency guidelines have failed to take their unique needs into account.
To address this issue, Honda has developed a roadmap (the Green Dealer Guide) for their dealerships to follow. The basics of this roadmap are:
- The dealership’s usage of electricity, natural gas, and water are tracked and recorded.
- An energy-efficiency expert is consulted to provide an assessment and prepare improvement recommendations.
- These recommendations are then implemented as soon as possible.
- Several post-implementation checks are carried out to ensure that the desired energy savings have been achieved.
The team at Middletown Honda decided that such a process was well worth the benefits that would be provided, and the dealership has completed the roadmap in order to secure status as a Gold-Level Honda Green Dealer.
It is estimated that lighting accounts for around 25% of a dealership’s total energy consumption, while heating and cooling accounts for 50%. New measures can slash those numbers. Water consumption can be reduced by 30 – 50% with the installation of proper fixtures, while solar panels have the potential to result in 100% of a dealership’s required energy being produced on site. Thanks to the Green Dealer program, Middletown Honda has begun to make crucial energy-saving changes.
