Are today's digital radiography systems superior to computed radiography systems? Discover the truth and the power of X-rays from Health Tech, Inc.
PRLog - Mar. 20, 2014 - The Pure Power of X-Rays: Digital Radiography Systems

Radiography technology is arguably man's most important ally in the war against disease. This is nowhere more evident than in the incredible advancements made in digital radiography systems over the last few years. In fact, only recently, scientists in Germany were able to study live cancer cells in detail thanks to highly advanced, high-energy digital radiography equipment and x-ray techniques that up until a few years ago didn't exist.

What This New Technology Means to Cancer Research

Previously, the only way scientists could study cancer cells using x-rays was to first subject the cells to a chemical preservative, which killed the cell and caused its internal structure to change to some degree. But, with newer, high resolution x-ray techniques, the scientists at the DESY Research Centre in Göttingen, Germany, were finally able to investigate actual living cancer cells in their natural environment.

The scientists used an X-ray beam to scan the internal nanostructure of the cells, blasted them for 0.05 seconds at a time to avoid damaging the living cells too. The result was images that were so clear that nanometer-scale structures were visible. While it is too soon to tell what this will mean for cancer research as a whole, this technology now makes it possible for scientists to study living cancer cells at ultra-high resolutions and this will help them understand the inner mechanics of living cancer cells that much better.

Digital Radiography Systems: DR vs. CR

In the radiography field, there is constant debate about whether digital radiography (DR) or computed radiography (CR) is superior. Both are actually considered digital radiography systems, and while they were once very different from one another, recent innovations have them growing more and more similar.

Digital radiography involve automatic processing and displays while CR systems have historically consisted of passive, cassette-based image acquisition and detector handling with offline processing. Unlike CR, which uses photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP) imaging plate readers, DR is a fully-integrated x-ray source-generator-detector solution that provides images ready for review within minutes after x-ray exposure.

But, in recent years, the two technologies have gradually merged with CR technology being developed into integrated x-ray systems with automatic acquisition, display, and processing, and DR technology adopting cassette-based detectors for greater flexibility and portability.
