Today, Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) announced the 2006 Spirit of Excellence Award recipients. This award recognizes suppliers that have taken an active role in Hormel Foods’ quality improvement process over the past year. These suppliers range from a variety of service areas, including purchasing, transportation, provisions, pork producers, contractors, co-packers and local plant suppliers.
“I’m very proud to recognize these 70 suppliers. We hold our suppliers to the highest standards and this year’s award speaks to their caliber,” said James P. Snee, director of purchasing, Hormel Foods.
To qualify for the Spirit of Excellence Award, suppliers must maintain a minimum Supplier Rating Index score of 92 over a 12-month period. Criteria factored into this minimum score include: ability to meet requirements, timely deliveries, provide accurate administrative support and maintain inventories. Additional criteria that are factored, but not required, include: customer support, awareness of environmental concerns and sales representative performance.
A universal measurement system has been in-place since 1990 to ensure every supplier is held to the same standards. Scoring criteria for these awards were examined after the 2005 award and cumulative Supplier Rating Index scores changed as new standards were established across various divisions. These scoring criteria are evaluated and established by the Supplier Quality Management committee who collectively administer the award program.
All winners of the 2006 Spirit of Excellence Awards enter the running for the Hormel No. 1 Award. This award is given out every five years and will next be awarded in 2011 for 2006-2010; criteria for the Hormel No. 1 Award calls for the recipient to have received a Spirit of Excellence Award during four out of five years.
