New Paradise 80W X-Band GaN BUC Packs Big Punch in Small Package

Paradise Datacom, a Teledyne Technologies company (NYSE: TDY), today announced the release of a versatile new 80 watt X-band Block Up-Converter (BUC) powered by Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistor technology.

The new vBUC performs at one of the highest levels of power efficiency of any comparable BUC in the industry. This is due in part to the advantage that GaN technology has over Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) technology, enabling devices to pack a higher power output capability within a very compact physical enclosure.

“Paradise has reached a new level of power efficiency with the rollout of this vBUC,” said Tony Radford, VP of Sales and Marketing for Paradise. “GaN devices are really the ideal power amplifiers at microwave frequencies since they can operate at much higher temperatures and work at much higher voltages than corresponding GaAs devices, and can deliver greater linear power capability.”

The Model VBUCX80A is housed in a lightweight enclosure that weighs only 11 pounds while delivering 56 watts of WGS Linear Power, thus making it one of the most powerful X-band BUCs in its weight class. This full-featured BUC includes Ethernet, FSK and Serial M&C, Output Power Detection and Output Isolation. The internal converter will automatically detect and synch to 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 MHz reference signals.

The new vBUC includes amplifiers for 80 watt C-band and 40 watt Ku-Band models in the same package, with a 10 watt Ka-band version soon to follow. The vBUC is capable of using an external or optional internal reference signal to phase lock the local oscillator, and is available with a variety of input power options: via IFL, 24 or 48 VDC or via an optional AC Power Supply. The vBUC is available in 1:1 redundant configurations and 1:2 redundant configurations with the addition of a RCP2-1200 Redundant System Controller.
