X-energy Selects Geiger Brothers for $40.8 Million Site Development Phase of TRISO-X Fuel Fabrication Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee

X-energy Reactor Company, LLC (“X-energy” or the “Company”), and its wholly-owned subsidiary, TRISO-X LLC (“TRISO-X”), today announced the selection of Geiger Brothers, Inc. to develop the site of its first-of-a-kind advanced nuclear fuel fabrication facility (“TX-1”) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The $40.8 million site development phase will create approximately 100 jobs and is projected to be completed in July 2025. This award is part of X-energy's participation in the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (“ARDP”), and TX-1 will provide the fuel for the first and subsequent deployments of the Xe-100 High-Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor. X-energy selected Geiger Brothers through a competitive evaluation process that considered environmental, health, and safety (“EH&S”) factors, quality assurance, management approach, schedule, project history and team, and costs.

“Our TRISO-X fuel fabrication facility in Oak Ridge will manufacture fuel for a global fleet of advanced reactors, bringing U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership to the world,” said Joel Duling, President of the Company’s TRISO-X advanced nuclear fuel fabrication and development subsidiary. “Geiger Brothers has earned a strong reputation of success in both the private and public sectors, and we are excited to partner with them to carry out Phase 1 of this important project.”

In October, X-energy announced a Series C-1 financing round of approximately $500 million, anchored by Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”). The investment will help meet growing energy demands by funding the first phase of TX-1, as well as the completion of X-energy's reactor design and licensing. Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin, affiliates of Ares Management Corporation (“Ares”), NGP, and the University of Michigan joined Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund in the financing round.

X-energy’s pioneering Xe-100 advanced small modular reactor and TRISO-X fuel are among the safest and most reliable clean energy technologies. X-energy is developing its initial Xe-100 plant at Dow Inc.’s UCC Seadrift Operations manufacturing site on the Texas Gulf Coast. Supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (“DOE”) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (“ARDP”), the project will be the first grid-scale advanced nuclear reactor deployed to serve an industrial site in North America, providing the site with zero-carbon emissions power and high-temperature steam. Earlier this year, DOE, as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, awarded X-energy a $148 million investment tax credit to enable the commercialization of this first-in-the-nation facility to exclusively manufacture TRISO fuel, which DOE calls “the most robust nuclear fuel on Earth.”
