Phison Closes Milestone 2021

Reaches 2000 patents, more than 3000 global employees

Phison Electronics Corp. (TPEX: 8299), a global leader in NAND flash controller integrated circuits and storage solutions, today announced record successes and growth in 2021 as it released industry-first technologies, expanded its enterprise services, and earned historic revenue. Phison technology even landed on Mars as part of NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover.

In 2021, Phison continues to expand its leadership in PCIe Gen4 SSDs as multiple design-wins across PC OEMs and game consoles are now shipping in high volume.

As the supplier of the first and highest performing Gen4 controllers, Phison was proud to ship to partners its PS5018-E18 PCIe Gen4 controllers for ultra-advanced 176-layer 3D NAND. The new E18 and 176-layer NAND combination delivers unprecedented performance surpassing 7000MB/s read and write performance. The E18 holds seven world records and earned more than 40 industry awards, while the full line of SSDs with Phison controllers was named the industry’s best by Storage Newsletter.

The company also began developing its first PCIe Gen5 controllers, the E26, and is preparing to provide the E26 controller-based SSD solutions to partners that are eager to adopt the newest storage technologies in 2022.

Via key partners, Phison was able to contribute to the development of innovative new storage for data security, content creation, and gaming. With Cigent Technology, Phison co-created the first self-defending storage devices with its Crypto-SSD™ self-encrypting drives and Cigent’s cybersecurity built in, to protect against ransomware and data theft.

Data security was a continued priority in 2021, and Phison earned FIPS 140-2 security certification for its SATA and PCIe product lines, enabling them to be used in technology for governments and their contractors.

For OEMs serving professional users, Phison developed a new prosumer class of SSDs for write-intensive workloads such as video production, animation, code compiling, and crypto mining.

Phison was first to enable Android gaming smartphones with its NVMe E13T BGA SSD – typically used in laptops – to give users an exceptional mobile experience.

Phison was the first to ship the PCIe interface SD card, SD Express 7.0, enabling its manufacturer partners to lead the way with high-performance mobile computing devices.

Phison’s commitment to R&D extended to high-speed transmission interface technology, and in August 2021, it solved key issues plaguing PCs and servers using PCIe 5.0 high-speed interfaces. The result was Phison’s Redriver IC PS7101 that effectively allows more configurable parameters to be compatible with motherboards, and provides an “auto tuning” tool to help designers identify the best parameters for compatibility between the CPU and Gen5 SSDs, enabling faster time-to-market.

With demand for automotive technologies increasing, Phison was accepted into the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium, an industry association dedicated to developing best practices for the coming vehicle and computing convergence. By joining AECC and collaborating with global tier one car system integrators, Phison is contributing to the next generation of automotive storage solutions for electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and other future technologies.

As a result of its leadership, Phison’s consolidated revenue in October 2021 was the highest single month in the company's history ($216M), and cumulative revenue for the first ten months of 2021 was also a record high for any ten-month period ($1.848B).

Because of the company’s momentum Phison was able to create jobs worldwide, increasing its head count to more than 3000 globally, which includes its expanded Enterprise SSD Engineering Lab in Colorado, where Phison experts support enterprise and data center customers with custom services.

“In 2021 we saw great achievements through our partnerships, particularly in the enterprise and embedded storage divisions, as the need for NAND solutions expanded and R&D thrived,” said K.S. Pua, CEO of Phison. “We’re grateful our efforts are being rewarded, and in turn we hope to give back to the communities where we operate through our social responsibility initiatives.”

To this end, Phison recently signed a ten-year green power purchase agreement to minimize its environmental impact. Earlier in 2021, it began a five-year program to support rural students, including instruction in STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics). The company also continued its support of frontline medical workers, which it began early in the pandemic in 2020.
