Leaders from Marathon Petroleum’s Garyville refinery announced a second round of community investment grants to support the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts in St. John the Baptist Parish, home to the Garyville refinery.

Just days after Hurricane Ida caused wide-spread devastation across Southeast Louisiana, including in St. John the Baptist Parish, Marathon Petroleum provided a $1 million donation to support recovery efforts. To further Marathon Petroleum’s commitment to the impacted areas, this week the company announced an additional $925,000 in local investments.

  • $450,000 for education initiatives that will benefit our community’s youth
  • $275,000 to strengthen our coastal landscape and for updates to five parks across our community
  • $200,000 toward workforce development opportunities benefiting our community

Together, the nearly $2 million in recent investments will benefit these communities for years to come.

“We express our sincere appreciation to Marathon Petroleum for their generous donation during this challenging time,” said St. John the Baptist Parish President Jaclyn Hotard. “We are grateful for the continued support of partners like Marathon, as we work together to recover and rebuild following Hurricane Ida.”

Marathon Petroleum’s Vice President of Refining Michael Henschen made the announcement and addressed community members directly at the 23rd Annual St. John United Way Golf Classic, held Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Riverlands Golf and Country Club in LaPlace.

“We’ve shown what happens when everyone comes together for the betterment of our community,” said Henschen. “We not only help each other endure challenges like Hurricane Ida, but we develop programs and initiatives that make our community stronger.”

Eighty-one teams participated in the day’s golf tournament, also presented by Marathon Petroleum, which benefits the St. John United Way.

Marathon Petroleum’s community investments benefit nonprofit organizations and local governments, including the Red Cross of Southeastern Louisiana, St. John United Way, St. John the Baptist Parish, New Wine Development Corp. Inc, St. James Parish, Ascension Parish, Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, River Parishes Community College and the St. John the Baptist Public School System.
