Bellman & Symfon Offer Tips on How to Protect Your Hearing

Permanent hearing damage can affect a person's quality of life and require assistive listening devices to function.

WILMINGTON, NC, October 15, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- October is National Protect Your Hearing Month. We live in a hectic and loud world today. Many of us are constantly battering our ears with sounds far more piercing than we really should be. Repeat exposure to loud noises for an extended period can cause permanent hearing damage that you will never recover even after you cease exposure to whatever may have caused it. It's vital to work on saving your hearing BEFORE anything happens to it.

Most people have a basic idea of hearing protection, though many actively ignore taking the steps they should. Loud sporting events, intense concerts, enjoying those fourth of July fireworks, they're all going to cause damage to your hearing over time. Beyond that, most people don't consider things as seemingly harmless as using power tools, going to a loud gym class, or even mowing the lawn can cause damage to your hearing over time given repeated exposure.

Since hearing generally returns to full capacity within hours after exposure, many simply write it off. This repeat exposure is your worst enemy, though.

Protect Your Hearing, You Only Lose it Once

The best way to protect your hearing is to avoid loud noises as best you can, and if you can't, try to use earplugs, noise-canceling headphones, or any other hearing protection. If you can, of course, turn the volume down to a comfortable level and take breaks from loud noises. If you can't hear a normal conversation over the noise around you, it is too loud!

Those with hearing loss tend to struggle hearing high-pitched sounds (things like alarm clocks, doorbells, phone ringers), pick out individual conversations in busy places, and feel intermittent pain or discomfort. Some may even have a permanent ringing noise in their ears. If this sounds like you, it may be worth talking with your doctor to rule out anything potentially severe and get on track to help you deal with your hearing loss.

Did you know that hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition in the US? Almost twice as many people report hearing loss as they report diabetes or cancer. In the US alone, about 40 million people aged 20-69 years old have hearing loss that was brought on by excessive or loud noises. Even more are starting to develop hearing loss, with no signs of slowing down as our population ages.

"By the time most people can figure out that their hearing isn't what it once was, a lot of permanent damage has been done," says Peter Jungvid, CEO of Bellman & Symfon North America. "We have designed products to support those with hearing loss and impaired hearing."
