American Lyric Poet First to Commemorate Duke of Edinburgh’s Passing

Official Poet Laureate of England Silent Thus Far!

With the United Kingdom and the entire British Commonwealth in mourning, one might have expected the official Poet Laureate of England to have published the first poetic tribute to Prince Philip following his peaceful passing last Friday, April 9, in Windsor Castle. However, this was not to be the case. Only two days later, Joseph Charles MacKenzie, the prominent American lyric poet, posted a stunning video of a love poem, entitled, “The Higher Charms,” which pays tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh in his relationship to his wife and sovereign Queen Elizabeth.

In promptly publishing the “The Higher Charms,” MacKenzie follows the example of an earlier Poet Laureate of England, John Masefield (1878-1967) who published a poem in tribute to George VI, Queen Elizabeth’s father, within days of the King’s death February 6, 1952.

The beautiful tribute is accompanied by the lute music of “Now, O now, I needs must part” by the English composer John Dowland (1563-1626) and may be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2SfGJo017I

MacKenzie is the Winner of the 2020 Society of Classical Poets Prize and the only American to have won the now defunct Scottish International Open Poetry Competition. Known primarily as a sonneteer, Mackenzie is the author of two collections of sacred sonnets with a book of love poems scheduled for 2022.
