'Leading with IT: Lessons From Singapore's First CIO' by Alex Siow is a "how-to" book written for the next generation of CIOs, CTOs and other executives who work closely with technology

SINGAPORE - March 10, 2021 - PRLog -- Wiley announces a new book, 'Leading with IT: Lessons From Singapore's First CIO' by Alex Siow, the first chief information officer of Housing development Board (HDB) in 1989, and currently a professor in the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Offering the next generation of business leaders and executives working closely with technology practical tips and personal insights for navigating the rapid digital transformation efforts due to the pandemic and thriving the new normal.

The book defines the new normal as a digitally enabled way of living that cuts down on physical interactions and increases mobility. The effects of quarantine, isolation, and travel restriction during the pandemic contribute to the tools and cultural challenges created by the sudden shift to virtual work. Globally, companies are responding by adopting digital technologies that are inadvertently accelerating their digital transformation plans. The rise of digital adoption is significantly disrupting the traditional workplace setting, forcing the adoption of remote and new ways of working. The question remains how organizations are trying to achieve digital transformation and the technology they need to get there?

Many large organizations face the challenges of business units (BUs) not being well-supported by the IT department (ITD). The author points out that the issues could be due to poor project management and poor communications between the BUs and the ITD. The book discusses common barriers to digital transformation and how to overcome them. This includes the management of legacy information and telecommunications technology, information overload, motivation and mentoring, change management, fostering innovation, and the future of money, work, and artificial intelligence. It also provides recommendations to organizations on the strategic use of information and communications technology (ICT) to boost the organization's productivity and details the prime role of a CIO as an advisor to the organization on the strategic use of ICT. Ultimately, the CIO's task is to foster creativity and innovation.

"There are two sides that define a CIO's roles and responsibilities," the author writes. "On the one side are technical and organizational skills, including time and project management, planning and budgeting, and helping the enterprise "keep the lights on." On the other side are soft managerial skills, of which finding, motivating and retaining a good pool of talent should take the prime role."

Whether you are a C-Suite executive in forward-thinking growth companies that are beginning or are in the midst of their digital transformation or other executives who work closely with technology, this book aims to inform and educate readers on the crucial role that IT plays in organizations and why the C-suite should offer CIOs a seat on the top decision-making body or board. As businesses shift their technology investments to embrace digital transformation, putting CIOs and CTOs at the forefront of digital work transformation is crucial in keeping businesses abreast of new industry developments that pop up every single day.

'Leading with IT: Lessons From Singapore's First CIO' is now available at all major bookstores and online book retail platforms.
