Jeffrey A. Berman, M.D., DFASAM, from Teaneck, N.J, is recognized as one of America's Most Influential Physicians for his outstanding contributions within the medical field and his research regarding substance abuse.

TEANECK, NJ, April 03, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jeffrey A. Berman is an accomplished health care professional with over 25 years' experience in addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry, specializing in the treatment of young adults with substance use, co-occurring mood, trauma and other mental health disorders. His sought-after experience and knowledge has led him to serve in multiple leadership positions. He is currently serving as both Executive Medical Director for Discovery Institute for Addictive Disorders and SOBA NJ as well as Senior Psychiatric Consultant for U.S. Immigration Health Service Corps in the Department of Homeland Security.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brooklyn College. He earned his M.D from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. Dr. Berman received a Master of Science in Specialized Journalism from NYU Polytechnic (formerly Brooklyn Polytechnic University). Dr. Berman completed his specialty training at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

From 2001 to 2006, Dr. Berman was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and served as Associate Training Director of the Addiction Psychiatry Training Program. He is still an active member of the clinical faculty of the medical school and on staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.

Previously, Dr. Berman was a consultant to several pain management programs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania where he developed programs for treating patients with co-occurring addiction, pain, and, mood disorders. He was also the Medical Director of Geisinger Health Care's Marworth Chemical Dependency Center in Waverly, PA. Dr. Berman was Director of Addiction Services at Summit Oaks Hospital in Summit NJ. He was recruited as Interim Medical Director and Director of Chemical Dependency Services at Bergen Regional Medical Center, New Jersey's largest acute psychiatric hospital. whilst simultaneously maintaining a position at the Department of Defense's US Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

Dr. Berman recently retired from 22 years in the US Army Reserve as Colonel, previously serving in Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. His service included MEDEVAC officer and analyst at the U.S. Embassy in Tel–Aviv and Chief of Psychiatry at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, Ft. Leavenworth, KS.

His special area of interest, research and teaching lies in Pain Management, and Co-occurring Opioid Dependence. He is a strong advocate for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those with substance use disorder and persistent mental illness. He has developed innovative delivery systems and models or care for these populations. In 2001, Dr. Berman participated in NIDA's clinical trials of Buprenorphine/Naloxone for opioid dependence.

Dr. Berman is board certified in General, Addiction and Consultation Psychiatry (ABPN), Addiction Medicine (ABPM) and Anesthesiology (ABA). He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (DFASAM). Dr. Berman served as President of the New Jersey Society of Addiction Medicine from 2005-2008. Dr. Berman speaks nationally on Medication Assisted Treatment and Co-occurring Disorders, sharing his extinguished knowledge with the medical community.

In an effort to give back to his community, Dr. Berman has worked in collaboration with members of the Bergen County Jewish community to build the support group 'Strength to Strength'. The group serves parents of young adults who have substance use and mental health disorders. He serves as a consultant to the Professional Assistance Program of New Jersey (PAPNJ). He has been a member of the Standing Committee for Physician Assistants of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiner since 2005.

When not at work, Dr. Berman enjoys spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoys studying Jewish History and Yiddish Literature, Broadway and the Jersey Shore. He is an avid writer on the topic of National Security issues.
