This celebration of the life and legacy of Johnston is both a tribute and a call to action to remove the stigma around mental health and to encourage conversations about well-being. Grammy Award-winning rock band Cage the Elephant will be headlining, sharing the stage with other performers including White Denim, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Jason Falkner, Katie Schecter, and other special guests to be announced soon.

AXS and Stingray will live stream the Hi, How Are You Day 2020 concert on both platforms to give people around the world the opportunity to witness this special event for free. To further encourage community and conversations around mental health with college students, American Campus Communities will host live-stream watch events at its communities on and near campuses across the country.

On January 22, 2018, Austin, TX united in the first Hi, How Are You Day. Austinites were encouraged to check in on a neighbor, friend, co-worker, family member or loved one and ask, “Hi, How Are You?” - and to really mean it! Founders Tom Gimbel and Courtney Blanton were inspired by Austin’s love for the iconic friendly frog mural painted by Daniel Johnston -- himself a world-renowned musician and visual artist despite his own struggles with mental health issues -- to create the Hi, How Are You Project in partnership with Johnston’s family in 2018. In July 2018, ACC purchased the Goodall Wooten building on which Johnston’s mural is painted to preserve his important work and legacy for future generations. In 2019, ACC partnered with the Hi, How Are You Project to launch a training and awareness program geared toward tackling the issues of mental health among college students. The success of the day - and the outpouring of support from around the world - inspired the formation of the Hi, How Are You Project. The mission is to remove the stigma and shame around mental health, so people will feel open to communicate.

“It’s amazing to see the progress we have made in just two years since we came together in Austin for the first Hi, How Are You Day, which inspired our formation of the Project to help make sure people feel open to communicate about the importance of mental health and well being,” said Tom Gimbel, longtime manager for Daniel Johnston and co-founder of the Hi, How Are You Project. “We are so appreciative to ACC for their ongoing partnership and for being the hero sponsor of our greatest fundraising and awareness-raising event of the year. Together, we will make an even deeper impact with students not only in our respective hometown headquarters of Austin, but around the country.”

Starting this month, over 200 properties owned and/or managed by American Campus Communities will go through a special Hi, How Are You Project-based training. The trainings will become a guiding tenet for American Campus’ Residence Life program, which offers events and information with health and wellness as a key topic. Asking residents, “Hi, how are you?” is a simple step toward starting a conversation about their well-being and letting them know someone cares.

“American Campus Communities is proud to support Hi, How Are You Project’s important mission of removing the stigma around mental health and encouraging people to check in on each other,” said Bill Bayless, co-founder and CEO of American Campus Communities. “We have a passion for building community and connection among our student residents, our staff, and the universities we serve, and we’re thrilled to be expanding our partnership with this charity organization as we implement our peer-to-peer team training and awareness program on mental health and wellness at our communities across the country.”

Additional artists, programming details, and information about the event will be announced in the coming weeks. For more information on the Hi, How Are You Project and Hi, How Are You Day 2020, please visit www.hihowareyou.org and follow along at @hihowareyouproject.
