U.S. Treasury Sanctions IRGC Operatives Plotting to Kill Former National Security Advisor John Bolton, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and National Iranian Congress Senate Chairman Amir Abbas Fakhravar

Houston, Texas Jun 4, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - U.S. Treasury Sanctions IRGC Operatives Plotting to Kill Former National Security Advisor John Bolton, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, and National Iranian Congress Senate Chairman Amir Abbas Fakhravar

On June 1, 2023, The U.S. Department of Treasury sanctioned members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and IRGC Qods Force who participated in assassination plots targeting former U.S. government officials, and Iranian dissidents. The Treasury Press Release appears here.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that Amir Fakhravar indeed is one of the Iranian dissidents who are targets for assassination by the Iranian regime. Since 2021 the FBI informed Amir Fakhravar that he was a target of several terror plots by the Islamic regime of Iran, specifically by the IRGC's Qods Force. FBI authorized Fakhravar to state publicly that he is one of the dissidents targeted by the regime mentioned in the DOJ and Treasury Department's statements. In an interview with NewsMax, Fakhravar expressed his deep gratitude to the Bureau for the protective security provided to him. The FBI Affadavit of August 5, 2022, supporting the criminal complaint against the agents of the Islamic Republic's IRGC, Shahram Poursafi, is identified as being involved in the assassination plot. Poursafi was seeking to identify Fakhravar's home address to execute the murder-for-hire operation. FBI has access to a voice tape of Shahram Poursafi's conversation to try to fix the location of Fakhravar's residence.

These cases are examples of longstanding attempts by the clerical regime in Iran to silence its critics abroad, including those in the United States. Mr. Fakhravar recalls the murder of Rouhollah Zam, the creator of AmadNews and critic of the regime. Zam also was a Senate board member of the National Iranian Congress for seven years and that association with Amir Fakhravar and the National Iranian Congress was cited by the regime as justification for sentencing Zam to death. His execution is testimony to the regime's relentless pursuit and murder of its critics. (See the Iran official news agency's statement on Feb. 10, 2020, here and the NIC Press Release of April 12, 2022, here.) Amir Fakhravar noted that the regime's attempts to murder its critics both inside and outside Iran serve only to strengthen the resolve of the people of Iran, the National Iranian Congress, and all like-minded organizations to remove and replace the oppressive clerical regime with a freely elected, secular government under a new constitution guaranteeing the fundamental rights of all citizens of Iran.
