“During the six-month, extensive search process conducted by DRG Search firm, we were impressed with David’s compelling strategic vision for JVS and his experience leading large mission-focused organizations,” said JVS Boston Board Chair Joe Zeff. “David’s leadership will be marked by fresh ideas, a deep commitment to our mission and a focus on engaging our entire community.”

“I see JVS as a natural extension of my previous work and passion for developing, supporting, and amplifying innovative programs to address issues of equity and social justice,” said Fleishman. “As a public school leader, I always sought to lift all learners and their families to ensure that they had the support and skills to succeed. I was drawn to JVS for its adaptability and innovation, which are essential in achieving equitable outcomes for clients. I am excited to begin this new chapter and work with a great team.”

“At his core, David is an individual who is committed to education, equity and inclusion and collaboration – all traits that are foundational to JVS. His creation of a department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Newton Public Schools is viewed as a statewide model,” added Zeff.

Prior to his service with the Newton Public Schools, a district with 22 schools, 13,000, students, 2,500 staff members, and a $240 million budget, Fleishman served as the Superintendent of the Chappaqua (NY) school system for five years, and as an assistant superintendent of schools with the Wellesley Public Schools and Ossining (NY) Union Free School District. Earlier in his career, he served as a social studies teacher, director of a school-to-career internship program, and an education policy advisor. He holds degrees from Connecticut College (BA, Government), Harvard University Graduate School of Education (Ed.M., Administration, Planning and Social Policy) and Columbia University, Teachers College (Ed.D., Educational Administration).

Fleishman succeeds longtime CEO Jerry Rubin, who retired from JVS Boston this month. In September, Rubin will join the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School as a visiting fellow with the Center’s Project on Workforce.

With a budget of $20 million, JVS Boston employs 200 people, and helps at least 15,000 people every year, most of them adult immigrants enter the dramatically altered job market through its vast education and training programs. JVS Boston’s unique long-term partnerships with employers connects individuals to quality jobs that offer an ideal fit and have the potential to lead to meaningful careers.
