LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / July 26, 2024 / Jewish philanthropist and advocate Janine Winkler Lowy participated in a delegation to Israel organized by Beth Jacob Synagogue to visit communities affected by the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and learn about current needs and ways the diaspora can help address them. The group of 14 congregants traveled more than 7,000 miles to witness the aftermath of the attacks and to identify how best to support affected communities.
Janine Winkler Lowy shared her reflections on the trip, emphasizing the critical need for support during these challenging times.
"I was humbled by the many stories of heroism I heard on the ground in Israel," said Janine Lowy. "Communities across Israel are in need of support as they continue to navigate the aftermath of the tragic October 7 attacks. Jewish philanthropists across the diaspora have a duty - and an obligation - to lend a hand."
The delegation's journey began in K'far Aza, southern Israel, one of the initial sites of the Hamas attacks. Walking through the remains, the group was struck by the damage and the lengthy process of rebuilding that lies ahead. At the Nova Music Festival site, they heard harrowing accounts of survival and loss from the attack.
The delegation also visited Hadassah Hospital's underground medical facility, where they met with wounded soldiers, and concluded their tour in Tel Aviv's Hostage Square, engaging with families of hostages.
"The stories of resilience and strength we encountered during this trip served as an important reminder of the enduring resolve of the state of Israel," said Lowy. "Israel is the guarantor of Jewish life and the Jewish future. As we return to Los Angeles, we must do everything we can to ensure its people can live peaceful, vibrant lives."
